Awesome By Proxy

I did….

I was able to…

I came up with…

They did…

They were able…

They came up with…

That pretty much sums up the majority of tweets, status updates, blog posts, and conversations that I’ve been seeing.

And I understand, I really do.

I mean, we should be excited when we are able to do something that we were not previously able to do.  And we should also celebrate other people’s victories.

But it should go further than that.

Those things should point to Jesus and not to ourselves.

I know this goes against everything we are taught: Show up, do the work, take the credit, and tell everyone how awesome you are.

Really?

Where’s the true humility?

At the risk of stepping on some toes let me say something that’s really important.

We’re really not that awesome.

Not on our own at least.

We’re awesome by proxy.

Yes, we are to do the work, but our results are because of Him.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:10 NLT)

It would do us well to remember that it’s because of Him.

And not us.

I’ve been guilty.

Too many time’s I’ve tried to play up something to make it look like I’m awesome. Too many times I’ve taken credit when I should have deflected it towards Him.

Why?

I’m sure it’s because of a desire for the approval of, well, everyone.

But no more.

If I’m going to Drip Jesus, I’ve got to make sure He’s the one who get’s the credit.

So stop worrying.

You really are awesome…by proxy.
